How to spend our holiday time?
To have forest tour with our family, friends might be one of our favorite things to do!
Fresh air, blue sky, beautiful scenery, exotic flowers, various birds’ chirp, special species, catch our eyes, ears and touch our soul inside, make us totally relax, also increase the mutual feelings with our family & friends invisibly.

Especially while hiking up to mountain, if we like animals and can see, even encounter Taiwan black bear – the largest land animal and only native bear in Taiwan & also strongest bear in Asia, it will be definitely lucky thing.

Physical characteristics
Taiwan black bear-Tuma called by the aboriginal Bunun tribe, means "hero“,
Taiwan endemic species. Characterized with chest deep “V” pattern, looks like crescent moon, so it earns the nickname “moon bear”.

Distribution area
Their geographic distribution is at elevation of 1,000~3,500 meter Taiwan mountain forests (as red marking of Taiwan map).

Fertility rate
Low fertility rate with 1~3 cubs every litter and there are about 200~600 Taiwan black bears in Taiwan, so rare!

Specialty
Tuma have acute senses of hearing & smell. With robust muscles and durability, they are skilled at climbing, can move very smoothly and acquire their food precisely.

Although they are powerful, they are not intrusive, unless you attack them. So if meeting them, please do not pretend to be dead, climb tree or attack them, but just leave that place quietly, then you will be safe.

Diet
Taiwan black bears are omnivorous, eat leaves, buds, fruits, roots…etc. And their favorite food is ring cupped oak nut. After eating, through defection plus daily flexible movement from this place to that place. Indirectly, they bring the plant seeds to different places and become the spreader of this plant.

Ability
They are non-hibernating. While growing up, Tuma are getting strong & heavy, length up to 180cm and weights up to 250kgs, let them have enough endurance to withstand long cycle & distance movement – daily activity range up to 50~100 square kilometers.

As the pioneer, Tuma’s ancestors had helped Taiwan aboriginal Bunun tribe to resist against enemy and other wild animals. Due to their courage & honor, Bunun called them “hero” & treat them as reliable partner. Both of Bunun & Tuma live in Yushan mountain(Jade mountain) peacefully.

Partner forever with always support
Nowadays, it is not so easy to see Taiwan black bear in forest, but they still give us continuous supports in our life by the other different appearance and help us to win victory once again for our living revolution!

Wonder how they make it? One hint for you – as the spreader of “convenience”.
